Foreign reserves rise further to $27.49bn

The nation’s foreign reserves on Monday rose again by 0.21 percent to close at $27.49 billion from $27.44 billion as at January 19, 2017, according to data obtained from the website of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
The increase in foreign reserves is attributable to the rise in oil prices. The Brent crude prices averaged $55.9pb between the 3rd and 16th of January. This is a 2.95 percent increase from December’s average of $54.3pb. Prices have stayed above $50pb throughout 2017, and closed the period at $55.4pb on January 16th. Current prices are 86.5 percent higher than a year ago of $29.7pb on January 15th; this is approximately 100 percent lower than 2016’s lowest price level of $27.72pb on January 21 according to a report by, Financial Derivatives Company.
The report said the level of net reserves is significantly lower than published reports. The external reserves level is 5.91 percent lower than 2016’s peak of $28.93 billion and 30.74 percent below 2015’s peak of $34.51 billion.

External reserves have been on the increase since October 21st.This trend is expected towards the end of January as forex inflows gradually gain momentum. Risks to this include stalled or disappointing borrowing plans and further disruptions to Nigeria’s oil production.

Child Brides In Nigeria

Child Brides In Nigeria

Nigerian Child Marriage

We take a look at the practice of female children being married off in Nigeria and look towards a future when this practice will no longer be common.

Last month, many Nigerians were up in arms over the issue of child marriage. This furore arose over a vote by the senate not to overrule a law which many have links to the practice of men taking child brides. The decision not to overturn the law came after a pitched battle in the senate, and in civil society. We take a look at the practice of female children being married off in Nigeria and look towards a future when this practice will no longer be common. According to some reports as many as 40% of Nigerian brides are under the age of 18 when they marry.

Zimbabwe’s president for another term

Zimbabwe’s president for another term

Zimbabwe’s president for another five-year term on Thursday

Veteran leader Robert Mugabe was sworn in as Zimbabwe’s president for another five-year term on Thursday before a stadium packed with tens of thousands of jubilant supporters.

Mugabe, 89, pledged “to observe, uphold and defend the constitution of Zimbabwe” in an oath administered by Chief Justice Godfrey Chidyausiku, extending his 33-year rule.

Supporters clad in clothes emblazoned with the image of the man who has lead their nation since independence in 1980 filled the 60,000-seater venue, a show of force after elections many say were rigged.

Opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai insists the July 31 vote was stolen and his party boycotted the inauguration.

Tsvangirai’s spokesman said the opposition leader “can’t attend a robber’s party.”

Nigeria at 40,….49,50,51 and still counting

Nigeria at 40,….49,50,51 and still counting

As the aging process continues to dump a new layer of sand on the Nigerian socio-political shore with little or virtually nothing to show as evidence of socio-political maturity, it behooves all Nigerians to begin to realize the compelling need for collective action in nation-building.
Abandoning the task of nation-building into the
hands of a ‘select few’ who have little or no interest of the nation at heart is inimical to our national dream and destiny.
Though October 1 1960 may be an important day in Nigeria. But it is also a day most Nigerians do not appreciate because several unfortunate and unpleasant events have happened since Nigeria gained her so-called independence.

All the indices show that there is little or nothing
to celebrate after 50 years of our national life,
especially with the high level of poverty. Successive administration has failed to put Nigeria on the path of greatness, what they have done is cause the nation more harm with their bad policies and lack of vision for the country.
Despite the fact that our leaders have failed us in
time past, the citizens are yet to successfully throw corrupt and bad leaders out of government and power. The non-chalance of most Nigerians towards the issue of leadership which many has
alluded to as the bane of meaningful development in Nigeria is a deep problem for a country that has been revolving around the same circle for the last 51 years. The slow level of development since independence shows that good leaders must emerge at all levels of governance if the future of Nigeria must be secured.

Obasanjo said Babangida should bury his head in
shame for not coming up with a single power
project during his similar eight-year rule.
Meaning he knows how through the quote has always being stated.

When Nigeria did marked the golden jubilee “50” I flip back at my country at fourty “40” to checked what has happened from that moment till the year before this present one, yet and still the country didn’t even remain stagnate other than working backwards

Nigerians have had enough of self-inflicted woes.
Most Nigerians, the silent majority, have
stagnated between the rock and a hard place for
longer than necessary. In the same vein, not a few
Nigerians have chosen to stoop so low, and
perpetually travailed on the path of discord and
dishonor, while some others have chosen to
slump down the steep slope of despair and
despondency with no savior in sight. Systemic
corruption on one hand and cold complacency on
the other hand, has combined to deepen our
bandaged sores. Enough is enough!
